MICHAEL E. GASPER听 is Associate Professor of History at swag外流 in Los Angeles California.听He has been named a Carnegie Scholar and a Mellon Scholar and is the author/editor of two books:听The Power of Representation: Publics, Peasants and Islam in Egypt听(Stanford University Press, 2009) and听Is there a Middle East: The Evolution of a Geo-Political Concept听(Stanford: Stanford University Press,听2011).听He is currently finishing a manuscript entitled听Identitarianism, State, and Sovereignty: Living Through the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990).
