From The Occidental: Men鈥檚 Soccer Wins First SCIAC Championship

Occidental men鈥檚 soccer won the聽2023 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics (SCIAC) Championship聽for the first time in school history with a score of 3-0 against University of Redlands Nov. 4.

According to Christian Corcoran聽鈥25, a defender on the team, the soccer team is absolutely buzzed.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been working for this for years now,鈥 Corcoran said.

According to forward Oury Diane 鈥25, the team believed that they would win SCIAC鈥檚 since the first day they arrived on campus.

Riley Nyhan 鈥25, a goalkeeper on the team, said he feels electric.

鈥淔irst SCIAC championship, it feels amazing,鈥 Nyhan said. 鈥淪o proud of the lads, everybody worked so hard 鈥 just so proud of everybody.鈥

According to Nyhan, the team had already beat Redlands twice already.

鈥淲e had the brooms out for three [wins] against Redlands,鈥 Nyhan said.

According to the聽, coaches Rod Lafaurie was named coaching staff of the year for leading the team to its first SCIAC regular season title. Assistant coach Ernesto Ramirez said he wanted to thank all the super fans, coaching staff and most importantly, the players.

鈥淭hey deserve [the win],鈥 Ramirez said.

Sebastian Romero (senior), a defender who was also recognized by SCIAC as the most outstanding player of the championship match, scored the Tigers鈥櫬爓ith a backward header off of a longshot throw in by Joey Shwartz 鈥24 by the fifth minute of the game.

According to the聽聽game recap, it was the second fastest opening goal in SCIAC history.

鈥淚t came as a little bit of a shock, I didn鈥檛 think I was playing too well,鈥 Romero said. 鈥淲hen I scored the goal, it just turned my confidence and the whole game around.鈥

Nyhan said there was never a doubt.

鈥淸I have to] trust myself and trust my teammates 鈥 and it worked out,鈥 Nyhan said.

Diego Cavalie 鈥27, a defender, said time stopped for him when he scored the second goal at 76:34 with a bicycle kick.

鈥淭ime stopped completely, and I just couldn鈥檛 believe it myself,鈥 Cavalie said. 鈥淚t felt as if I was in a dream鈥 it was crazy.鈥

Midfielder Andrew Notter 鈥25 said Cavalie鈥檚 goal was a highlight for him.

鈥淚鈥檓 so happy that he got his first goal today. It鈥檚 such a big moment,鈥 Notter said. 鈥淸I鈥檓] very proud of him.鈥

According to Ramirez, one of the highlights of the game was their first goal.

鈥淭he first five minutes, we put a goal in,鈥 Ramirez said. 鈥淚 think that was important for us to get our momentum going.鈥

Corcoran said he attributes the team鈥檚 success to Laufarie.

鈥淗e鈥檚 brought us up,鈥 Corcoran said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e really proud.鈥

Notter said the coaching staff was phenomenal in helping them get their wins this season.

鈥淭hey got us ready for every single game so [I鈥檓] very appreciative of them,鈥 Notter said. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e done so much hard work this year.鈥

Ramirez said the training was composed of a lot of hours of hard work.

鈥淭he preparation was the mental aspect,鈥 Ramirez said. 鈥淚t had to do with being tough and getting it done.鈥

According to the NCAA website, the Tigers lost 0-1 in overtime against Chapman University in the 2022 SCIAC championship game. Corocoran said the team didn鈥檛 want to feel that loss again.

鈥淲e just believed we could do it,鈥 Corcoran said. 鈥淲e knew how it felt last year, it was really bitter, we hated it.鈥

According to Ramirez, they kept last season in mind as they prepared for this year.

鈥淲e put in [hours] to making sure, if we had the opportunity to step into the final again,鈥 Ramirez said. 鈥淭hat this time we got it done.鈥

Notter said it hyped them up knowing they almost won last year.

鈥淲e had a taste of it last year鈥 it was on the tip of our tongues,鈥 Notter said. 鈥淲e finally got it done this year, so I think we鈥檙e all very, very happy.鈥

Ramirez said they suffered in the first half after their goal, but a few adjustments were made for the second half which led to getting their second and third goals, boosting the team鈥檚 morale.

Cavalie also said the team鈥檚 morale was amazing.

鈥淭he team culture is insane,鈥 Cavalie said. 鈥淓veryone loves each other.鈥

Notter said he is very excited for the聽, where the team will play the University of Saint Thomas Nov. 11 in Houston, Texas.

According to Diane, this is just the first check.

鈥淲e got to keep going,鈥 Diane said. 鈥淣ow, NCAA [tournament]. We go.鈥
